Creative Coaching

I offer coaching to anyone who wants creative guidance. You might have a specific printmaking query, wanting guidance on a specific project or just wanting help on embarking on a regular artistic practice.

During the session, we will discuss your work and ways to move it forward. I will encourage you to take risks and move out of your comfort zone by setting you projects that are specific to you and your goals. At the end of each session I will suggest tasks to complete before we meet again, the result of which will be discussed in the following session.

A one off session maybe all that is needed or you may want to arrange to have a series of sessions in order to have accountability and focus – many students find that having regular sessions ensures they have made a commitment to developing their own work and practice.

I have been teaching for over 17 years – I started teaching at the Royal Drawing School and gained my teaching qualification (PGCE) at the Institute for Education at the University of London in 2009.

I have worked with all and abilities, from after school clubs to MA level students. I taught at the BRIT school of performing arts for many years and was a core tutor at the Foundation course for the Royal Drawing School for 10 years until the course closed in 2021. I currently teach on the public programme at the Royal Drawing School and I am the course leader for their new programme ‘The Drawing Gap’

I’m happy to answer any questions you may have, just go ahead and book a taster session and we can go from there.

My fees are £60 per hour session or £30 for 1/2 hour. I also offer a free 30 min taster session.

Sam’s warmth and enthusiasm has made tackling my mental block with drawing a lot more fun than I could have imagined! I’ve learned a wide variety of practical strategies and techniques to help loosen up my drawing style. What I maybe wasn’t expecting is how rounded Sam’s teaching approach is, discussing what lies behind my fear of drawing, sharing lots of practical tips, and gently building up my confidence – all of which have enabled me to become more relaxed and experimental with my drawing.

Sam has proved to be an unbelievable mentor and coach to me for the past year. She listens and works with you on your needs and goals, is supportive, yet not afraid to challenge or question where needed. Despite a global pandemic and being 6000 miles away I achieved all my original goals – a completed body of work, an exhibition and obtaining a place on a specific arts MA course. I’m really thankful and look forward to continuing to work with her.

As a self-taught artist, I personally lacked the confidence and skills to improve certain areas of my practice. Having creative tutoring sessions with Sam has been the best decision I ever made regarding my creativity journey.  Sam has come to know me as a person and guides me to make decisions and fulfil actions that are self-enhancing for me.  I feel the progress I have made this year has been phenomenal – thanks to Sam.  I look forward to every session and always leave taking something valuable away that I can implement.  My confidence in my journey has grown immensely and this has been through Sam’s support, guidance and encouragement.  Thank you Sam!

My sessions with Sam are so important for me, they help me improve my art skills but also help on a personal level.  I can see how my drawing improves after every single session. Our sessions always open up new ways of thinking and new perspectives, that help me in my creative process but also in life. Doing this on a regular basis is the kind of commitment I need to keep going even in times I feel like giving up. I always feel like Sam takes time for her students and the coaching sessions are so encouraging, I always feel so good and motivated afterwards. I am so extremely happy to have found Sam as my mentor. For the first time in my life, I feel like a life as an artist isn’t completely out of reach for me.

Sam is so positive with me and very encouraging with my creative journey, she is great at keeping me on track with my artwork and is always there with suggestions and ideas to keep me moving forward.I first approached Sam when I was not sure where to go with my printmakingI started to have a couple of creative coaching sessions over a period of few weeks that were so supportive it gave me the enthusiasm to do more and motivated me to become more focussed with my artwork.Sam encourages me to think outside the box and gives me the confidence to be objective about my artwork and look at it as a whole package – photography, social media, markets and target markets and planning for the future.I look to Sam as being a friend and mentor, who is looking out for me every step I take, and I know if I have any questions or ideas I can run them by her and be confident in my own actions.

It all started with a few online workshops with Sam, when I was beginning to dabble in printmaking. Soon after that I realised that there’s so much more I could do. Sam kindly offered her help and since then I have been coached and tutored in various aspects of art and creativity. This helped me dig deeper and improved my own understanding of what I want to do with art, how I want to interact with it, and what it all means to me. It’s definitely not a short trip, it’s a journey… and I have been enjoying it immensely!

Initially, we focused on overcoming my fear of drawing (or rather, understanding what drawing means to me, why I need it in my life and why there’s no need for perfection). Together with Sam, we have been exploring various techniques (pencil drawing, collage, mixed media) with a bit of art history and looking into the works of other inspiring artists – many of whom I had never heard before – definitely an eye-opening and stimulating experience.

Sam is an experienced teacher and a mentor, who is kind, patient and generous with her comments, feedback and knowledge. All these are invaluable to me on my own way to figuring out my growth and a direction that I want to take. Working with Sam is both exciting and challenging – it challenges my own preconceptions and my understanding of art. It helps me discover and establish my own artistic form of expression – what it means to me and why it is never too late to start this journey.
